City of Asheville holds 9/11 remembrance ceremony

The City of Asheville held a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 11 in front of the Municipal Building, 100 Court Plaza.

The ceremony was in remembrance of the 2,996 people who died during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on hijacked United Airlines Flight 93.

The ceremony opened with a welcome by Asheville Fire Chief Scott Burnette. There will be a presentation of colors by the Asheville Fire & Police Department Honor Guard. Ric Ledford sang the national anthem.  Chaplain Wayne Roper will give the invocation and closing benediction.

There wee special remarks from Vice Mayor Gwen Wisler and Asheville Police Chief Tammy Hooper. The ceremony will have a moment of silence.  The Honor Guard will place a wreath in honor of those who died, and there will be a ringing of the bell. Following that, the AFF Pipes & Drums will perform.

The remembrance ceremony, organized specifically for City employees, was open to the public.
