Preconstruction staging for River Arts District Transportation Improvement Project to begin

RADTIP image

Since 2010, the City of Asheville has been working on the River Arts District Transportation Improvement Project (RADTIP): a transformative project in the River Arts District that will strengthen transportation connections.

Through improvements to roadways, intersections, stormwater and bridges; and additions to sidewalks, bike lanes, greenways and on-street parking along Lyman Street and Riverside Drive adjacent to the French Broad River, part of the Wilma Dykeman RiverWay Master Plan will soon become a reality.

In July, the community will begin to see on-site action as the preconstruction work for RADTIP gets underway.

What to expect

Businesses and visitors will likely notice crews working on staking out right of ways and monument placement as early as next week. Following that, PSNC will begin improvements to their gas lines. PSNC’s work will continue until they are completed, with no outages and only minimal traffic impact expected.

Bids for the renovation of City Building at 14 Riverside Drive are due on July 6, with minor traffic impacts anticipated from the on-site utility relocation. Duke Energy will begin to prepare for their utility relocation in mid-July by mobilizing crews and staging materials on City-owned property.

Later this year, staff anticipates additional pre-construction work. As these activities get closer, additional information will be available at ashevillenc.gov/river, including expected closures, more detailed timelines, and regular updates.

Late summer and fall

  • Tree clearing and grubbing for utilities to begin in August.
  • Duke Energy Utility Relocation:  Anticipated utility work to begin in September.
  • Demolition for road improvement to begin in fall.

Property owners will be notified directly as far in advance as possible.

Coming soon, updates will be available by clicking on “RADTIP Construction Updates” at ashevillenc.gov/river. We will continuously work to provide you with timely communication on this exciting project.
