Share your expertise, serve on a City of Asheville committee

Have you wondered, “Can the City benefit from my experience and knowledge?” Do you want to have a voice in the City’s growth and future? Do you want to be a part of the body that is responsible for making decisions regarding policy, service and education?
If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, then it’s time to put your perspective, leadership and knowledge to task by serving on one of the many committees we have to offer. The City of Asheville has openings on several committees right now.

The deadline for receiving applications for these openings is 5 p.m. August 25. To apply for any of these openings go to the City of Asheville website at ashevillenc.gov/Departments/CityClerk/BoardsCommissions.aspx. Download an application of request one from the City Clerk’s office at mburleson@ashevillenc.gov or 259-5601.

 
Planning & Zoning Commission
The Commission is an advisory board to City Council and reviews proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), and proposals to zone or change the zoning of all property regulated under the UDO and makes recommendations to City Council for final action. Commission members also review applications for residential and commercial development and preliminary plans for developments and then makes recommendations to City Council for final action. The Commission reviews studies and surveys of land uses, population, traffic, parking and redevelopment needs. It also reviews and decides on approval of all proposed preliminary plats of major subdivisions.

 

Transit Committee
The Transit Committee functions as an advisory board to the Multimodal Transportation Commission and to the City staff on matters affecting the transit system and its operation. The Asheville Transit Committee meets the first Tuesday of every month from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. The meetings are at City Hall in the first floor conference room.

 

Greenway Committee
The mission of the City of Asheville’s Greenway Committee is to advise the Multimodal Transportation Commission and City staff on implementation of a system of greenways within Asheville by integrating City and County Parks and Transportation plans while educating and engaging the public and advocating for funding. The Committee meets the second Thursday of each month at 3:30 p.m. in the first floor conference room of City Hall. The normal length of the meeting is one to two hours.

 

Recreation Advisory Board
The Recreation Advisory Board is a citizen advisory board that takes up matter pertaining to the operation of park facilities and recreation programs within the City of Asheville, to make policy recommendations to the City Council, and to carry out duties as may be assigned to them by the City Council. The board meets bimonthly on the second Monday from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. in the first floor conference room of City Hall in January, March, May, July, September and November. The appointment is for a three-year term, and each board member may serve up to two consecutive appointments. Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. September 2.
